Prime Minister, Dr. Ahmed Nazif, reviewed procedures taken in the River Nile waterway development, in attendance of the Minister of Interior; Habib El-Adly, Minister of Local Development; Mohamed Abdel Salam El-Mahgoub, Minister of Transport; Eng. Alaa Fahmy and Minister of Water Resources; Dr. Mohamed Nasr El-Din.
Dr. Nazif confirmed that the Nile waterway is one of the main natural tools enjoying massive economic possibilities that can be used in goods and public transport, as well as being a tourism resource of economic revenues.
In this concern, the meeting followed-up on implementation of various aspects including the completion of purification and organization of the Nile waterway from Cairo to Aswan. The Minister of Irrigation confirmed that large part is already purified and will be ended over the few coming period.
The second point tackled was determination of ships' harbors as well as locations to be allocated for establishment of goods ports. The Transport Minister said that six places were prepared and an experiment is currently carried for transporting wheat shipment from Alexandria to Cairo through the Nile waterway. The coming period will witness development of ports and harbors, the Transport Minister added. In this regard, Dr. Nazif highlighted the importance of setting an exact plan for the civil defense, fire, river ambulance and security.
Dr. Nazif highlighted the necessity of the administrative side restructuring in the Transport Ministry as well as developing skills of the Maritime Transport Authority aiming to increase its effectiveness. He also called for the importance of establishing an organizational body for the river transport sector to guarantee aspects related to management and operation.
