Prime Minister, Dr. Ahmed Nazif, received President of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, Massoud Barzani. During the bilateral talks, both sides reviewed bilateral relations between Egypt and Iraq in general, and the Kurdistan region specifically. The talks covered economic ties. The meeting was attended by Ministers of Culture, Petroleum and Investment.
During the press conference, held after the talks, Prime Minister Nazif praised the Egyptian-Iraqi strong relations, something which was reflected in the intensified exchange of visits between both countries.
The talks also covered means of enhancing cooperation between both sides. Dr. Nazif said that a delegation headed by the Minister of Investment, Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, with the participation of representatives of number of private sector companies will visit the Iraqi Kurdistan region in the near future, to explore available opportunities for investment and trade exchange aiming to restore trade figures achieved prior to 2003.
The Prime Minister noted that there are large possibilities for cooperation between the two sides especially in the energy field, due to experiences enjoyed by the Egyptian companies, which could contribute in rebuilding such sector in Iraq, in addition to the cooperation possibilities in information technology and construction.
Regarding the internal development in Iraq, Dr. Nazif hailed the political process therein and expressed eagerness for the formation of Iraqi government, as soon as possible. The prime minister confirmed Egypt's support to all political parties in Iraq, which seek to achieve stability, and called for the necessity of cutting roads before other parties which seek instability.
Massoud expressed his pleasure for visiting Cairo aimed at recognizing the Egyptian officials with Iraqi recent development, as well as discussing opportunities for cooperation increase in all economic fields.
Concerning the internal situation in Iraq, Massoud mentioned that despite of the achieved relative stability but they still suffer from terrorism continuity therein.
As for relations between Iraqi Kurdistan Region and neighboring countries, Massoud stated that relations are passing positively and cooperation is largely developed.
