Egypt's vision on D-8 activation

On behalf of President Hosni Mubarak, Prime Minister, Dr. Ahmed Nazif, participated in the 7th Summit of D-8, held in Abuja, the Nigerian Capital, on 8 July. The Prime Minister delivered a speech on this occassion.

• Stating that the main objectives of D-8 since holding its first summit in Istanbul June 1997 are still valid due to their increasing importance, especially issues related to discussing means of dealing with challenges and opportunities generated from globalization.

• The importance of Egypt's vision to enhance the multilateral international frames due to their significant role in assisting the developing countries in achieving economic development, avoiding negative impact of the global financial crisis, dealing with challenges forced by the climate change, food security and energy efficiency, along with emphasizing the necessity of continuing to express aspirations of the developing countries as a priority on the international agenda.

• The priority that Egypt attaches to enhance D-8 role as an important forum for deepening the South-South cooperation, as well as assuring the necessity of revitalzing the forum activities.

• In this framework, the speech welcomed the dynamism witnessed in D-8 activities during the previous two years, especially within the ministerial conferences held on food security, industry and agriculture, beside the current consultations on the establishment of a preferential trade area among D-8 members.

• The speech included Egypt's vision to further develop the D-8 work in the future, through upgrading the trade and investment relations, exploring means to expand cooperation between them, to cover new innovative fields, information technology and communication, developing the clean energy resources, and suggesting the study to implement a number of pilot projects in these fields.

• Assuring that D-8 member countries enjoy the economic and social components to be qualified for a South-South cooperation model, something which called for the necessity of setting a clear vision to enlarge partnership among the member countries, as well as working to overcome negative impact of the global financial crisis through liberalizing trade, refusing protective trends, pumping short and long term incentive packages in economies aiming to create new job opportunities and keeping the development rates sustainability.

'Abuja Declaration' Summit tackled number of economic issues related to means of facing consequences of the global financial crisis, along with evaluating the existed cooperation between the member countries in trade, agriculture and industry, and making a political push to implement number of joint cooperation programmes topped by the establishment of a joint investment fund.

It is worth noting that D-8 is formed of number of developing countries namely Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Nigeria representing 60% of the Islamic World and 13% of the whole World. D-8 was established in June 1997 and aims at improving situation of the developing countries in the global economy, increasing the developing countries' participation in the international decision making process, and increasing trade movement of the bilateral trade among them .
